Father TJ, we continue to be by your side in this obstacle that God has put in front of you. We continue to pray for a miracle upon you. We continue to believe that what God wills is what you desire. We continue to keep your name in our thoughts as you continue your fight. “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40) We pray to see you walk with us once more, we pray to hear your cheerful voice once more, we pray to see your smile brighten our day. Together we pray by your side, forever and ever.

    Hi there Father,
I keep sneaking your name onto the prayer list at Holy Ghost each week. Sometimes I am a lector and sometimes a Eucharistic minister, but in usually in the sacristy before mass. I have been adding your name to the list each week if they forget and take it off! Prayers for you, as usual, and love coming your way from the Mackins. We love the picture on this website with them. It’s also the background on my phone as a daily reminder to me of how much you love all of the Cristo Rey kids.
Love, Gabriella Mackin and “the Mackin 5” (and Brock too!)

Dear Father TJ, I thought I knew you, but as I have followed you on this site, I feel I have come to realize what a remarkable person you are. In Jewish celebration of Passover, they have a song called “Daiyenu” which translates “It would have been enough..” When I look at your life, I think if you had just become a lawyer, it would have been enough. Then you gave your life to the church- it would have been enough. Then you started this amazing school and it would have been enough. You went to Africa and finished your task. Then faced with cancer, you bravely fought and continue to fight. I know that when you could have said, “It’s enough.” you carried on. You have touched my life and for that I thank you. I pray for you continually, may God bless you.

    Fr. Martinez,

I was very blessed to meet you and receive a big hug from you on the night you attended the Mass of the Holy Spirit. The blessing of all the students, parents and teachers of the school was very uplifting. I feel so blessed by God to have my son attending this school. I work at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and I only wish we had an opportunity like this when I was my sons Joshua’s age. I let him know all the time that he was given the opportunity of a life time and he should take it as a blessing form God. In a society of so many bad thing that we hear and see now days, it is so spiritually moving to see a group of amazing individuals, who have decided to give of them selves to give others an opportunity to do better in life. To give them an opportunity to do God’s work and lift their sprits. Everyone’s efforts allow them to realize how the Holy Sprit can help them through their struggles and to know that God is always at your side regardless of where you are form. You inspire me to be a better person. Forgive me for shedding a few tears when meeting you but, to me you are truly one of God’s angels. I pray with all my heart and spirit that God will grant restored health and continue to bless you with his grace.
I hope to see you again soon.

I sincerely thank you again for sharing Gods Love with all of us at Christo Rey Jesuit,

    Hello Father Martinez,
I am related to Nick and Amberley Doskey and was deeply touched by your spirit during their wedding weekend. I have never forgotten your vibrancy, huge smile and zest for the Lord.
I have been thinking of your healing and praying that God continues to bless you with the strength you will need to fight your battle.
Know that you are cared for and that you have touched hearts and brought God’s peace to those around you. I know He is pleased with you. I will continue to remember you in my prayers. Please don’t let that smile turn upside down. It is contagious and one of the most beautiful smiles I have been pleased to witness.

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
    2 Corinthians 12:9

Hello, our friend. As is true for so many, you remain in our daily prayers. You have touched so many, and I know each person and those they encounter are enriched as a result of your inspiration. We enjoy the photos of you. Not surprising, your hair is always perfect!! I should visit your barber, ha!
I failed to tell you, that David, Luke and I were flying from Amsterdam to London in the Spring and a man seated next to me had a Matthew Kelly book, Rediscovering Catholicism. I was also reading it, so we introduced ourselves. He lives in Dallas and would you believe, he knows you and is very familiar with you from DJ and CR. Very small world.
Hurry and get better. I can’t wait to try and “trip” you again. All our love and prayers, Annie and David

    Hello T.J.!

Your grad school friends are thinking of you! We just donated some money to Cristo Rey in your honor, and we want you to know that we pray and pray and pray (Leland might win the award for the most praying, but I’m in a close second!) and send you so much love and laughs and joy and memories and are thinking of you so often. We know that this is a hard time for you, and so we want you to know that we are out there, across the country, in schools and non-profits and offices and homes, sending you tons and tons of support and love.

You’re the best. We love you.

    TJ,

There’s not a day that goes by when I’m not asking Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro to pray for you and to intercede with the Lord for your healing from cancer. Most days, that happens 3 or 4 times since I’ve added that prayer to my grace before meals and to my bedtime prayers. I’m sure Blessed Miguel Pro is sick of hearing from me…………….

Your love of God and trust in Him is amazing. That’s so difficult for many of us to understand. But we continue to learn as much from you in this current ugly situation as we have in all the wonderful years since we met.

Know that I, the Brown family, and thousands of others lift our prayers for you to Blessed Miguel and to God every day. “The impossible just takes a little longer.” You will triumph!

    “Viva Cristo Rey!”

I just recently heard of your diagnosis and am committed to pray for you throughout your treatment.

I have very fond memories of our childhood in Brownsville…

Here is a verse that ministered to me as my oldest son Jarrett battled through multiple heart surgeries, a tracheostomy and cancer…

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.

I pray that as our Lord’s cup of suffering overflows into your life, the comfort that Jesus gives would overflow out of your life to those around you in need of Him.

    In Christ,

    Stan

    Dear Father Martinez-

I continue to ask God, our Great Healer, to bring complete recovery upon you and to cover you and your family with His mercy and grace.

Peace be with you! Cathy Beathard

    1Peter 1:3-7
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade–kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith–of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire–may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

Father T.J. Just wanted to let you know that I pray for you at every Mass at which I serve. I appreciate, greatly, all you have done for our Holy Church, our community and, especially, for the youth. You brought hope, promise and (most important) action!

I pray that you continue to gain strength and that you have the peace and love of God with you always and that His light continues to shine in your eyes, His love rests in your heart and that His hand is on your shoulder to guide you.

    Peace and grace

    Father TJ,

Jackie and I think of and pray for you often. We are always reminded of the good relationship you had with Greg, our son, and no doubt with many Jesuit students We all appreciated the extraordinary effort you made to visit him in the hospital. He was always excited about your visits which had such a positive impact on him during difficult times. We will continue to pray that God will give you the strength to endure the pain and suffering especially during post chemo periods.
We pray for a miracle that many more good works can done according to his will.

God bless you, Fr. TJ, and all your good works!!! Clem Zang

    TJSJ,

Congratulations on your vows! Although it has been over 10 years now, I am so thankful that you were a part of my life in high school when I was friends with a group of Jesuit students that were close to you. I have many fond memories of times with you, one in particular being a graduation scavenger hunt we did. (I think it was a combination party for John Sabine, Rob Harris, Casey Seraphin and Logan Roach.) You have had a huge impact on my life and am thinking of you and praying for you always.

Father Martinez, congratulations on your vows! You have made such an impact on my life. I look at you and truly know what it is to be a man for others. Your leadership and the example you set for me at Jesuit Dallas will hold a long lasting value to my life. Laura and I still talk about what a true blessing it was to have you marry us. The time we got to spend driving down the Pacific Coast Highway with me talking your ear off after you were delayed for hours is something I will never forget and neither will anyone that attended our wedding 🙂 We pray for you daily and we love with you with all our hearts. I tell my son Hudson about you and what a wonderful man you are. Thanks for all you do!

    All of our love,
    Ryan, Laura, and Hudson

    Fr. Martinez,
We still pray for you and think about you daily!! At Holy Ghost parish, where we attend and the girls are altar servers, I put your name back on the prayer list for the sick so that all of the parishioners prayers will be added to the many, many that are being said for you. You were also prayed for at the AYC (Archdiocesan Youth Conference) and the kids continue to wear the orange wrist bands for you.
We remark all the time at our home how much you are one of the brightest of God’s lights shining, no matter what your physical health may be, and how we are praying for you to have strength and comfort through this time. You continue to inspire us with the grace you have facing this journey through illness.
Alessandra faced a similar journey when she was little, and we as a family learned so much about faith, about placing your troubles in Jesus’s hands, and that God’s blessings come through the people we encounter when we are facing difficulties. I hope you also experience the signs of God’s care for you every day like we did.
Thank you again for founding the place for my now 5 teenagers to grow their minds, their hearts, and their souls. Dominic starts tomorrow as a freshman!!
    Blessings, Gabriella Mackin

Congratulations on your vows! That is so amazing and I’m going to have to brag on your behalf to our BC friends! You are in my prayers, every day…and I am reminded of your strength every minute I look down onto my left wrist. I have not taken my Team Fr TJ bracelet off since I put it on April 11.

I’m sure you don’t remember, but back at BC in…oh…1990, maybe ’91, you gave me “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.” Still my favorite book and the biggest pick-me-up.

You are a pick-me-up to everyone you come across.

Thinking of you and thankful for you,

    Father TJ
I wanted to let you know that my prayer time this morning has been dedicated to you. I met you briefly on two occasions in my life, a first communion Mass for my niece and a Regis School of the Sacred Heart graduation for our twin boys. The Holy Spirit was burning brightly through you on both days, and I was very inspired to be a magnet for Christ like you were on those days.

I juat want you to know that at this very moment, I am thinking about you and awake. Beside you in the garden, not asleep. I will be with you and you with me all day. My family and I will continue to pray for your healing.

I pray that all your sufferings will be washed away so that we can continue to witness, in you, the greater glory of God!

I too am battling cancer with my stepdaughter Lily who got an experimental bone marrow transplant in May in San Antonio. Her leukemia is gone but is now battling a life-threatening infection. I dont understand why so many loved ones get cancer, but i do know we serve a mighty God who can perform miracles for both you and my daughter. I am so proud to have called you my friend back at St. Joe, you have made a difference in this world with all the work youve done. God bless you and keep you strong my friend! Keep fighting!

    T.J.,
I’ve watched this page for news and updates. Ann and I have spoken often about this Journey you are on, and it’s meaning for your friends, your family for the school. I was at BC about 3 weeks ago (recall the last time we met was at BC during the time of your Harvard studies) and ‘they’ were very tuned into your news, your Journey.
You’ve only begun to set a significant mark on this planet, my friend!! That’s why the Journey has an upper case J. We all get to demonstrate our commitment to others in life, and what special ways you have done so … not only — in the Christo Rey success — but in the ways you demonstrate how to put the teachings of the Lord into practice.
    Well done1 Onward!!

  121. Ron & Mariette Woestemeyer July 1, 2014 at 6:04 pm #

    Dearest Father TJ:

It is with immeasurable sadness that we received the message about your health some time ago. Ron and I are keeping you in our thoughts and our prayers and wish for nothing more than your renewed health and vigor. You have made such an amazing difference in our community. It is really hard, actually quite impossible, to imagine Cristo Rey without you. Though there are, no doubt, capable candidates to replace you, we are convinced there are none that come even close to matching your energy, your infectuous enthusiasm, your love and care for the students and your ability to motivate and rally the community in favor of your ever so worthy cause.

When we received the horrifying news about your health, we were a bit angered at the man above for inflicting this on you and for the unfairness of it. I wrote a message to your office to let you know that you simply must conquer this. There is too much left to do for a person like you, whether here in Houston, or some place else. The world would be a poorer place without you and Cristo Rey Jesuit is undoubtedly not ready to be without you. You would be too terribly missed. So, please take the utmost good care of yourself and get well soon.

    Affectionately

    Ron & Mariette

Dear TJ, as I walked my dogs a few days ago, I found myself lost in thought. It took some effort to set my own problems aside, placing them in God’s hands. Then I focused my thoughts and prayers on all those fighting for their lives, and on you in particular. A few minutes later, as I came around the bend, I was blessed by the sight of a rainbow. It was a welcome sign amidst the dreary clouds we’d been having. God’s creation of colors bright and strong, reminded me of God’s creation in you. Even with the stormy clouds in your life, you find a way to shine through. Thanks for being you!

Hi, Fr. TJ!! Hope you received (and read) my card some time back. I think of you daily, and pray for a miracle. I know God can do it!!! And I pray He wills it. I don’t know if Lori shared my funny experience with you. I was working in my front yard flower bed one day. Beautiful day!! I was intently thinking of you and praying for you. I began speaking out loud to God, asking that He might send me a sign sp that I would know He was listening. Within seconds, a beautiful, colorful butterfly appeared. I assumed the butterfly would sense my presence and fly away. It did not. It kept flittering around and kept landing closer and closer to me. I began speaking aloud to the butterfly, asking it if he was Fr. TJ or if he was another sign from God. The conversation was so intense and happy, that I was totally engulfed in it. I sensed the presence of someone near me, and looking up I saw the postman, walking guardedly past me, and yes, he was staring at me like I was a bit strange. He, of course, must have assumed I was talking to myself. That’s okay. The butterfly actually stayed for a while, and it was worth any embarrassment. (Actually, as you may expect, I don’t embarrass easily.) I wish I had a million funny stories to share with you and cause you to chuckle. Your smile is an inspiration to me and many others. Hope to see you soon, so you can see my TJ Miracle bracelet worn next to my ACTS Retreat fishing links bracelet, all day everyday, never take it off.
    God bless you and America!!
    Your friend, Annie

Fr. TJ Martinez SJ, I hope that this note finds you in the best of health and the lord’s hands. I know that you are facing this battle as only a true “Martinez” can, with your deep rooted faith and your head held high. It was a pleasure seeing you and that smile at the graduation ceremony this year. I got to see yet another Cristo Rey student (Vanessa Echavarria) accept her diploma this May from Cristo Rey Jesuit. That is the second graduating student we have mentored here at LINN Energy as part of Cristo Rey Jesuit’s Corporate Work Study program. Seeing Vanessa walk across that stage grinning from ear to ear and excited about her future was truly nspiring. It gives me hope for the future of Houston and has and the students of Cristo Rey. Hopefully this note takes your mind off things and makes you smile. I look forward to seeing you on the other side of this battle sir.

    Your friend,

    Father “TJ”

Happy Anniversary on your ordination to the priesthood. You are so blessed because you were chosen by God to serve him and all of us. Such an energetic, charismatic, caring and loving person. Thank you for all that you have done and what you will continue to do. May our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, continue to hold you in the palm of His hand.

“Lord, look upon Fr. T. J. Martinez with eyes of mercy, may Your healing hand rest upon him, may Your life giving powers flow into every cell of his body and into the depths of his soul, cleansing, purifying, restoring him to wholeness and strength for service in Your Kingdom”. Amen.

Precious TJ, looooove the chicken nugget story and that swallowing is improved!!! Keep up those attempts to eat. You know I adore you but more important, respect and admire you for all you have done to inspire others and show your zeal for the work of Christ! Without the intercession of the Holy Spirit, and a personal relationship with my Lord, Jesus Christ, I would not be following the plan of God for my life! My 3.5 years at Cristo Rey as school nurse practitioner will always be remembered as the TJ time! God’s timing is perfect… Take this time during treatment to do ‘anything you want to’. Why has The Lord slowed you down? Just know I look at my TJ bracelet every day and each time an Our Father is said! You know me, always start at the top! If you need TLC from a nurse practitioner! Connie Jacobs adores you! And MDACC will benefit from your presence as I pray you will benefit from treatment! Love you and am prayerfully keeping you in my heart and soul daily,!!!

As we travel you will be lifted up in prayer every morning and every evening and we will light candles for you in every church we visit. I keep you in my mind and heart always, mi hermanito. Luigi sends his love and prayers and we look forward to seeing you soon.

    Fr. T.J,
I have only met you once, in the kitchen at the Strake Jesuit residence on the morning that I came to transplant the passionvine there to full sun. You had just come back from a 6 mile run and were making wheat toast. I was delighted to finally have made your acquaintance, as I had admired your work from afar. We share a mutual friend from UD, Coco? She posted a very lovely collage of pictures of you on her wall, which I swiped and shared. Anyway, now that I see your street address posted, I will send you some “fresh” holy water from the Vatican and some other items that were blessed by His Holiness the week of the dual canonizations, which I attended with my youngest 2 children. We couldn’t help but remember your prayer intention everywhere we went, including Assisi. We have every confidence that prayer without ceasing will work miracles in your life. Godspeed, dear Padre. {Viva Cristo Rey ~ Viva Fr. T.J!} Love, the Hibbler Family

The balance has been on the side if hope. I am praying for God to give you the grace and endurance to cope with this illness! You are always surrounded by a cloud of prayer to carry and comfort you.

    TJ,

Two months ago we were standing outside of the Jesuit residency having a conversation. Since then, we’ve both celebrated birthdays, we’ve celebrated our mothers, and we’ve celebrated CRJ having its second graduating class all accepted into college and receiving MILLIONS of dollars in scholarships. We’ve also learned of your cancer. Throughout this process, I have had the opportunity to see how large of a family you have (I expected gigantic or enormous to only find out it is ginormous). Outside of one’s blood family, one’s family grows through their actions. You have earned this family and have built a global reaching community capable of incredible things. This is a family and community you built through your actions and by teaching, praying, inspiring, and even just listening along the way. We stand next to you in your fight and you should feel confident in your battle when you have this family and community at your side. Viva Cristo Rey! Viva La Virgen de Guadalupe! Viva TJ SJ!

    Nick D

“Whatever you are physically…male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy–all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you are the light inside.”

    Father TJ,

My daughter is a freshman at Cristo Rey Jesuit. Since the beginning of the school year, she has heard nothing but marvelous things about you. She was anxiously waiting to meet you, When she saw you, she said that it was like seeing an actual angel. She went up to you and introduced herself. She told me how you hugged her That day she came home excited and very happy. Over the weeks she would tell me how she’d see you and you called her “cutie” one day. On the Friday she learned of your illness, she was working and while at lunch she learned that the father of her best friend’s old school wanted to be taken off life support. Even though my daughter did not know this man, she was sad. She told her classmates, “I hope nothing like this ever happens to Father Martinez.” When she found out of your cancer she was torn apart. When she told me this tragedy I could see the pain in her eyes and the tears rolling down her cheeks. She couldn’t understand why this was happening, She was confused as to why God would punish you of all people, I explained to her that God works in mysterious ways. My daughter continues to pray for you everyday and she admires your attitude in the situation, So do I.

    Get will Father.

TJ aka TJSJ aka MTZ aka Papa Bear

Thinking about you daily while you are actively engaged in this fight. From Dallas to Boston to Houston, I know I followed the right guy around (not just hoping for free food), and I see the impact you have made everywhere you have been. You mean more to me than you will ever know. You have made me, along with hundreds of my Dallas Jesuit brothers, a better man and I cannot thank you enough for it. What you have done over the past few years at Cristo Rey is nothing short of spectacular (dare I say… miraculous?), and continues to inspire me to ask, “What can I do? How can I be more like TJ?” Not to mention that while being inspiring, exceptional, and all-heavenly, you have been humble, hilarious and my friend. You got jokes. You rock the hell out of belt buckles and cowboy boots. You make grey hair look cool (just kidding).

So my friend, good thoughts and prayers coming your way from Music City. Stay strong, stay fierce, stay classy!

I want you to know that all of us in Alumni Relations and Student Affairs at Boston College have you in our prayers. I found an old letter that I had sent to you when you were about to graduate with your Law degree and enter the Society of Jesus. All of us were so happy and proud of you and were eagerly waiting for you to become the next President of BC! You have accomplished so much in your professional life at Cristo Rey, and touched the lives of so many students and families. I’m sure that you still have many wonderful gifts to share with your flock. I am so sad that you have such a difficult road to travel to get to your next mission. But I have faith that you will make it in good time.
    With much love,

You know how much all of us in the Brown family love you, as do so many in so many families in Dallas and Houston. We are keeping up with the updates and praying the novena daily. I myself pray for your recovery several times a day,

We’ve had so many fun times with you and pray for more! We remember all those visits in Boston when Ryan was at BC. You were always so gracious and hospitable. We smile when we think of those great times. You’ve been an incredible mentor to Ryan but also an inspiration to us. We’re always amazed by your energy and focus. Your accomplishment with Cristo Rey Jesuit is huge. We loved being at the gala last year and are so proud of your graduating classes.

Continue to fight fiercely, our friend, and may our thousands upon thousands of prayers be answered!!

    With much love,
Milo Brown, and for Nancy, Ryan, and Laura

  217. Janet Holmes May 6, 2014 at 1:05 pm #

    TJ,
I reflect on my years of employment with Dallas Jesuit’s counseling department with great fondness. I will always remember your enthusiasm, contagious smile, boundless energy, love for the students and the jokes we shared.
God is watching over you; may peace be with you today and tomorrow.
    Praying for you my friend.

  218. Dana DeAngelis May 6, 2014 at 12:08 pm #

All of our love and prayers Father TJ. You are in our constant thoughts!
    Your friends at Auction Source.

  219. Tom Turnage, Catherine Donahue, Thomas & Joseph May 6, 2014 at 11:50 am #

    Our Dear Friend,
You have been such an inspiration and mentor to all of us. You have shared our happy times and sad times. You have been there when each of us has had trials. Your never-ending support is much appreciated. I recall with fondness our conversations in Boston as you were preparing for the next phase of your journey with Christ.

We are praying that our Lord sends a Legion of Angels to you, your family and your care team. We do not always know the reasons for the challenges we are confronted with but we do know that God hears our prayers. So, dear friend, may God send His Angels to rest upon your shoulders, comfort your family and friends and guide your healthcare team. Know that you are in our prayers. With much love,
    Tom, Catherine, Thomas and Joseph

    Hey Father TJ,

You know I want you to head our church one day! Ahhh, Pope TJ would fit you nicely. So get that strength back and finish all that’s necessary to get you back with us and among all of those who love you dearly. Along with the rest of Houston, you are in my prayers…..I have spoken often to Blessed Miguel Pro and I was not even aware of the man. I’m sure he is hearing the throngs of people who are lifting you up in our daily prayers. We will take that miracle any time. God bless you my beloved friend.

  223. Matthew May 2, 2014 at 9:55 pm #

    Father,

I have recently visited your school for an interview and have seen your passion through the videos posted on the web page. I am very impressed by what Cristo Rey Jesuit is doing for Houston, but also to uphold Jesuit values and ideals in education. I too have a similar passion in education as you do.

No te conozco personalmente pero te conocí un poco por los videos puestos en el sitio web. Estamos rezando por ti y ojalá que te mejores pronto. Todavía sigue luchando!

    Tu amigo no conocido,

    Matthew

We have been praying for your full recovery. You have a multitude of people praying for you in the Dallas area. I don’t know if you have had any contact with Matt, but he is very concerned and praying for you. He is in Austin doing his rotations. I know an email would mean the world to him (mtmcevoy1@gmail.com). Let me know when you get to have visitors and I will bring you one of those turnpike rest stop hot dogs that have been cooking all night even though I think it is your turn to buy. We love you and will keep praying for your complete recovery, because in our family we do know that miracles are possible.

  232. Whitney Easterling April 29, 2014 at 9:43 pm #

    Father TJ!

You have been heavy on my heart since I heard of your diagnosis. I know there’s a tough road ahead but have no doubt that Jesus has you in the palm of His hand. Times of suffering are not times we look forward to but we, as believers, can trust that God has a good and holy purpose for everything that happens in our broken world. My prayer for you is firstly healing, as we have a mighty God who’s abilities and power are beyond our comprehension…but also that God’s grace and comfort would be all the more tangible for you in this time. He is the greatest comforter of all, so I whole heatedly pray that you feel His presence in every step of this journey but especially in the hardest moments.

You are loved by so many and are an incredible servant of Christ.

Love you and praying for you often!!

    Whitney Easterling

  233. Sally Easterling April 29, 2014 at 5:17 pm #

Dear Fr. TJ, we were saddened to hear your diagnosis and the fight you have before you. Undoubtedly the optimism and energy you have brought to everything in your life will hold you in good stead now. We first heard of your illness after seeing your name on the St. Martin’s continuing prayer list. Now in addition to your loving Catholic family, the Episcopalians are lifting you up in prayer to our Lord. We look forward to reading of your return to health. We love you. Sally and Jim

  234. Sally Easterling April 29, 2014 at 5:05 pm #

Dear TJ, We were saddened to learn of the fight you have before you but heartened knowing what a fighter you are. First heard you were in need of extra special prayers upon seeing your name on the St. Martin’s continuing prayer list. So in addition to your community of Catholics praying for you, the Episcopalians are doing so as well! Surely, as your name is lifted up to our Lord, you are held in His embrace. We love you and look forward to reading of your progress to health and well being. Fondly, Sally and Jim

Dear Father TJ, Among all the others, I am praying for you. I have a streak of insomnia and so it is in the middle of each night, when I awaken, that I spend some time with Blessed Miguile Pro, telling him how very important you are to our community and to our world and pleading with him to plead your case to God. Though we have met only a few times, it has been my utmost pleasure to serve as cantor when you have presided. You made a lasting impression on my and all those around you. Fr. TJ, we need you. Please get well.

    Father TJ,

You and your family are in my prayers! The bracelet I received at the prayer service has been a wonderful reminder to pray for you and others on a daily basis.

You are one of the most positive and energetic people I’ve ever met. Your energy, strength and positive attitude are so inspirational. I pray that you will be healed so that you may continue to be a blessing to others.

    James 5:14-15 KJV
14 Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

We pray for you and all your family daily. I know how difficult this is to bear but in God’s hands, we are all able. I was so happy to reconnect with you when you came to Houston and am amazed with all you have done & to all the lives you have touched. You are truly a vessel of God’s goodness and faith, and we pray that you overcome this illness to continue your work. In times of trouble and hard times, I repeat the Serenity Prayer and carry it with me at all times. I pass this onto you & your family as well.

    Father,

We are praying for you and yes, cheering for you to win your battle against this awful disease. If it would help, I think I still have that pair of neon yellow soccer cleats. Rumor has it that you can beat anything with those cleats, such as a well deserved red card. If you can get out of a red card, it certainly has to help with cancer treatments.

    We all love you,

    Hi Father TJ,

I just wanted to let you know that we’re sending prayers from Philadelphia! My year at CRJ as a JV taught me so much about what service and love really mean, and watching you lead and love the students inspired me to pursue work in education. You’ve inspired me to run Broad Street in Philadelphia to raise money for the American Cancer Society! Please know that I’m praying for you and the whole CRJ community. You have done impossible things before, and I have every confidence that you can do it again.

Dear Father, I called a friend of mine, Father Peter Mary Rookey, O.S.M.
and asked him to pray for you. He is 96 years of age and lives in Chicago
at Our Lady Of Sorrows. I met him here in Sugar Land in 1997 as he was
holding a Healing Service here. When I came down with kidney cancer in
October of 2004 I asked him to pray for me. I have been doing well since
then. He told me that he would be praying for you as he said his Mass.
He is of the same Order as St. Peregrine, Servants of Mary.
Father, I have heard a lot of good things about you and I want you to
know that I and all of my family are praying for you.
Thank you for what you do. God Bless you Father.

Father Martinez: Do not lose the faith! I will pray for you and ask God to heal you. I lost my brother to bone cancer in May of 2013. His diagnosis was sudden-pain in April and diagnosed on May 15th. He went to be with God on May 21st. I believe in miracles…my brother had many car accidents before that and, each time, God gave him back to us-in good health. I miss my brother tremendously but I know God made many miracles before this bout with cancer. And so, yes, I will pray for you and send you a positive energy force. My brother Manuel was an Eagle Scout, strong in his Faith and a good man. I will also ask him to send you strength. May you heal to continue doing God’s work…Maria.

    Dearest Tj,
I was praying on the way to school,. when the song, overcomer, was playing on the radio. I was a little down because I had not heard anything as to how you were doing. I emailed it to you with the help of Calista. I felt God had sent it to pump you up. I missed you at the Magis Awards. They were beautiful. I was so overjoyed to see Bee’s post that you were able to start your chemo treatments. I was teasing the kids in class that I would call on the big guy, your fellow community brother, Pope Francis to get the whole world praying on your behalf. I see from these posts that has already happened. Plan B is in effect! Know you are loved…Sue and Mike

I will be praying for your intentions tonight in front of the Blessed Sacrament at tonight’s Holy Hour following the Holy Thursday Mass Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Frelsburg, Texas. I have asked others to pray for you today. Blessed Miguel Pro – Pray for Fr. Martinez.

  267. Andrew April 17, 2014 at 1:50 pm #

    Father Martinez-

While you and I have never met, and are not personal friends, you are my Brother; in Christ Jesus, and I yours. When I read your story, and subsequently the messages posted here for you, I was moved to write one myself. I will pray for you and your family daily. First and foremost, asking the Lord our God to intercede and work a miracle of recovery in your life – allowing you to return to full health. Also, that the hands of our Living God be on you and your family to provide healing, comfort, and peace as you fight this battle. While I’m not terribly familiar with Jesuits, my father went to Jesuit Prep in Dallas and I believe I’ve read somewhere that Jesuits are also known as God’s Soldiers, so I ask that he send an army to your aid. Additionally, in my daily prayers on your behalf, I will ask the Father to give the doctors who treat you the wisdom that comes only from The Creator of all things. He spoke everything into existence, put you together piece by piece, and knows exactly how to heal you for He is the one who designed and created you. I pray that He works through the doctors to heal you so that you may continue to do His work here on earth before you are called Home to be with our brothers and sisters in the Kingdom of God.

I also want to leave you with some thoughts that I hope will bring comfort to you and your family. While this diagnosis/prognosis must have been a shock to you and your family, it did not surprise God. This time may cause bewilderment and despair in you and among your family, however God will not be confused by it. This is a part of His Great Plan. Everything He does is to bring glory to His Kingdom and exalt his Great Name. I pray that He uses your miraculous recovery to do just that. Please take comfort in the fact that the Lord our God knows you, He knows your heart, He loves you, and He is carrying out His will in your life.

Romans 8:28 says “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.”

Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble”

    and finally,

Matthew 6:26 which says “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”

Father, you have great value to the Kingdom of our Living God – I pray, that while I do not personally know you or your family, that my words still manage to bring you all even a little bit of comfort. I will pray for you all daily.

With Love; Your Brother in Christ,
    Andrew

Two years ago my husband, Markus, was baptized into the church as an RCIA candidate. We might not know the beauty of this gift to our family if you had not taken the time from your incredibly busy schedule to talk with us as friends of Joe Turnage. As we prepare to baptize our new daughter in the Catholic faith, I have thought of you and how your selflessness with your time and your compassion for social issues in our world gave our family the opportunity to walk closely together in faith. We are praying the novena for you and so thankful for all of the time and passion you choose to give to others.

You’re in my thoughts and prayers daily. From Dallas to BC and back home to Texas, you’ve made an indelible mark on our lives and on so many others. Thank you for your friendship over the years. Patrick and I wear our Cristo Rey colors (and tie!) with pride.

    with love,

    Fr. Martinez,

I want you to know that you will be in my prayers and I will be asking for the intercession of Blessed Miguel Pro. What you have started in opening this school is a grace beyond words and I commend you on such an achievement to help the youth of this world. Praise be Jesus for it all. I want to share that I am currently residing in Italy with my new Italian husband close to Padua. We were married 11-24-13. Viva Cristo Rey …on Christ the King, whom is the head our our household. And felt Jesus telling us to be married on this date last year….it was a blessed ceremony in Italy.

After watching the movie, we were both touched by the lives that were lost for our beautiful faith and the courage, strength, and fortitude it took for all those who stood for Christ the King!

In this end of the Lenten season, I pray for you to have the same courage, strength, and fortitude of the soldiers of Christ. You are a soldier in Christ and this battle can be won and I pray for the Resurrection to come…in 3 days He will rise!! and you will too!

Small sidenote… I worked at MD Anderson for a short while in the Integrative Medicine Center as a Registered Dietitian, was a huge experience for me being part of helping people to heal. You couldn’t be in a better place.

I will pray for you and leave your name also to a dear friend of mine…Saint Antonio of Paudua! He had a role of intercession that brought me my husband after nine years of prayer. Also our Lady of Medugorje has led me down a miraculous path of grace and answered prayers and will be asking for her intercession for you too! Many prayers and graces to you. Praise be Jesus and Mary forever and Viva Cristo Rey!

    Blessings,

    Angela Kirke

    Dear Father,
I pray for merciful time for you. I ask God to continue to hold you lovingly in his arms and give you the strength you need to fight this disease. Please remember that attitude is a great benefactor in this disease-you have cancer but it doesn’t have you! I pray that when the right time comes for you to return home to our loving father that you have been able to complete your bucket list and will go in peace. I pray that is not for a long time to come. God Bless you and comfort you now.

Dear Father, There was a time, due to problems that I was having, that it was thought that I too had stomach cancer. Praise God I did not — I was pregnant at the time and it would have been very bad…. As God has it, I did not have cancer, but had a very long and painful road to recovery. My problems were immune related and it was quite a puzzling and difficult journey. I feel a kindred spirit with you due to this and I will therefore, pray for you very much as will my family. Please pray for us and give us your blessing in spirit! God love you! God bless you! God keep you! Mary, dearest, be at Father’s side always! Saints and angels keep him strong! May you, dear Father, be restored to health if it is God’s will!

Please intercede Blessed Miguel Pro, SJ, to the Holy Father in the healing of his Servant T.J. Martinez, SJ, who still has work left to do in your name. Amen.

Will continue to say this Prayer every day for you Father.

I am not sure how significant this following memory was to your life, but it was the first instance that came to mind when I heard this terrible news. I was an altar server at Strake Jesuit and Saint Anne Catholic Church. I was the sexton at a wedding at which you presided. I distinctly remember this wedding because I made the error of flipping the audio switch in the main box, a mistake I never made before or after, and for the first minute of the wedding, you had to shout without the use of the mic. As a lively and caring individual, this task meant no practical challenge for you. Throughout the entire church, your voice resonated with excitement and joy over the couple’s completion of Holy Matrimony. I felt terribly about making this fault, but your loving personality and exuberant spirit made up for my flaw, and the mass commenced incredibly well.

You also presided over a few other masses that I served at which were not weddings, and your contagious ecstasy that you emitted over the thrill of administering the sacraments and presiding over mass always got to me.

When I think of joyous individuals, you are often one of the first people who come to my mind. I pray that the estimation is inaccurate because losing your presence in the lives of the Cristo Rey students and the Houston Catholic community at large would be a great disservice. The kindness and gifts you offer are not often paralleled. I feel honored to have had these experiences with you, I hope they bring you the same joy they bring me, and I wish with all of my heart for a miraculous recovery.

    Father Martinez, Sj,
I do not know you, but I know the work of a Jesuit is an important one. I attended a Jesuit High School in Colorado by the name Regis Jesuit. I know the good work that the Jesuits do, especially in education. I believe that education is key for all people and I am very proud of the work that you have done in setting up a Jesuit institution of education. My prayers are with you and I pray that you have peace in this time. May you be happy, May you be heathy, and May you be at Peace! Viva Cristo Rey!!

Dearest Father, As I lay here in my own colon cancer recovery, I saw your story on Facebook and was moved to tears for you. I started the novena to Blessed Pro as I know God listens to our prayers. 17 years ago, i was told my fourth stage colon cancer would give me… Maybe 1-2 years but I had a total recovery (which I call a reprieve) until recently ….but this time I think it is caught early. Please know that God has a great love for you and will be with you in every moment of this journey. God bless you.

    Father Martinez,

Just wanted to say what a fantastic person you are. I wish you the best. You truly are great role model and I know that you will continue to do big and wonderful things. I still remember when you said that I was “great person” at Jesuit. I was not expecting it and frankly was shocked. You may or may not have known it, but it was exactly what I needed at that moment of my life. I’ve always cherished it.

    A sincere thank you.

Dear Padre, I am heading to Mayo Clinic for help with my own stomach. I have been advised to pray a daily affirmation of God’s healing action AS IF IT WERE ALREADY COMPLETE. Here it is. “I am healthy. I am happy. I am at peace in the loving embrace of God’s grace.” As we cling to Him, we know that God’s divine Love is filling us to overflowing, and wherever He carries us He will use our joys and sufferings to touch as many lives as possible with pure healing love. So I hope you will join me in this this proclamation. Whatever may happen to our bodies’ God’s love heals ALL. Amem!

My Dear Father TJ, I am so saddened by this news. I still remember you pointing to my door each time you passed my Theology classroom, as you read-out the sticker to all those CEOs which said, “We Love Our Priest!” I will never forget the connection we had on our Staff Retreat – when I shared a beautiful story of my husband and how God, through His loving Providence, divinely guided me to marry him so young, and we quickly had 3 small babies…how could anyone know that after I shared that story, a few weeks later my husband would be tragically killed. But you were there. You were there for me and came to visit me in my home, despite your busy schedule, and that has touched my heart and uplifted my faith ever since, THANK YOU! I am storming heaven for your recovery and beseeching Blessed Miguel Pro for prayers. I will continue to keep you close to my heart and my children and I will offer every sacrifice on your behalf. Our Mother is with you. I love you, Julie Ortiz.

My wife Celeste and I are praying for your recovery and we have your name listed in our church prayer list. My wife and I both had cancer, she in 2007 and I in 2011. If we didn’t have God in our lives when the doctor informed us that we were diagnose with cancer, we both would have been very frighten about the illness that we had. We both have always had trust and faith in God and we knew that God was going to heal us in His time. Prayers are very powerful to all who believe and have trust and faith in God. I had the privilege to meet you back in 2010 when my company was invited to meet with the students who were going to work at our office for that school year. I also had the privilege to meet Brandice Pierre and Dan Walsh; who I still keep in touch with, and who are very nice people.
Keep a positive attitude and always keep the trust and faith in God.
I work for Ensco International in the Galleria area.

    Many blessings and God bless!

    Dear Fr TJ,

Northwoods Catholic School in Spring, Texas will offer Mass for you on Friday, May 2. We know that if this illness is God’s will is for you, it will be the best way for you to glorify Him and to save souls. As a Jesuit, we are aware that the glory of God and the salvation of souls is the driving force of your life. But also know that the 8th graders will be present at the canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII and will ask both saints to intercede for a miraculous healing for you. We will also pray for the gifts of fortitude and piety so that you will have the grace to offer your illness for the Church and Catholic education here in Galveston-Houston. God Bless you, the students and staff of Northwoods Catholic School.

Although we never formed a relationship on a personal level, you still impacted my faith in a great way. You are a charismatic speaker with a tremendous will and drive to serve God. I remember seeing you every morning in the Strake Jesuit weight room working out, and I always wondered how you still found time to do that with all of your commitments at Cristo Rey. One thing that resonated with me after all of our brief encounters was that you always had a smile on your face. No matter what may have been going on, you just put your trust in Christ that it would all work out. Know that my family and I are praying for you in this tough time.

You are in our Prayers. I am a survivor of Stage 4 Melanoma for seven years. I received treatment at MDACC. Initially, the doctors gave me a 25% survival rate. Although, the Prayers from many people were answered, ” I am still around.” The doctors were amazed at my recovery. My wife is a survivor of colon cancer for thirty years. Keep the Faith. God hears us all and answers our Prayers! We love you and will pray for you daily. Have courage and believe in the power of prayer!!

Your good nature and foresight have been a beacon of hope in Houston. My Mom was diagnosed 9 years ago with cancer and was given months to live. She is still alive and I attribute that to the many many prayer she received from the Jesuits and the entire CRN community! I miss your smile and your fun loving nature. TJ, I remember when you first walked into Dallas Jesuit… this ball of excitement with an energy that not only followed you, but inspired those around you. We all spent our free periods in and out of your tiny office that it was amazing you got any work done. You could always find at least a few seniors in there, even when you weren’t… that’s the kind of impression you had on us. Occasionally funny, but more importantly, someone who welcomed everyone in with open arms. In those days, we looked at you as a mentor, a Man for Others, but most importantly as a friend on a journey like the rest of us. Now, we couldn’t be more proud of you, and blessed for the time we all had together. You might be a little guy, but I know you’re a fighter. I have you in my thoughts and prayers. Stay strong.

    Dear Father TJ Martinez,

I believe in miracles! God will touch you and you will be healed! Just like what He did to me…I am a cancer survivor. I was diagnosed in 2001 with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia and I was given three weeks to three months to live. Because of the power of prayers and support of my family and friends, I’m still alive and cancer free! It’s 2014 and it’s been 13 years since then. God had better plans for me and I’m living the mission He wanted me to accomplish in which I was probably born to do also. I’m sure your mission is much better than mine, so hang in there, the heavens will be bombarded with prayers by many many people whom you touched, you don’t even know most of them, but they love you!

I understand how it feels to undergo treatments, constant poking with needles, etc.. Be strong and keep on fighting your illness!

    TJ,
You and your family continue to be in my thoughts and prayers each day. Billy, the kids and I are so blessed to have you come into our lives. Aside from being the amazing man that you are and all that you have done for the kids and families at Cristo Rey and Dallas Jesuit, you have also been amazing at comforting our family these last four years in good times, hard times and tough times. I am sad that we did not get to spend Christmas Day with you this year. I thank you and for giving me the gift of your friendship. As crazy as it sounds, since I can not give you a hug, talk to you or see you in person, I will use this post it page to take its place until you are stronger and we can finally go to dinner and catch up and hear about your travels in Africa. At our house, when we wink at each other in public places, it is our secret way of saying I love you. We figured at some point our kids would be embarrassed to say I love you in front of their friends. I do not want to sound like some crazy lady posting on your page. Here going forward, I’m closing my post tonight with a wink, wink and after praying for strength and guidance for you with Will, Cate and Caroline, I will pray one last time by myself. Stay strong, rest and let us work hard with your prayers. Wink, Wink!

I am praying for you to Blessed Miguel Pro…your example of holiness and your vibrant enthusiasm serve as a source of hope and inspiration to all those around you. I pray for your school and for a miracle for your health. Viva Cristo Rey

    Father T.J.

You are my first impression of Dallas Jesuit. You walked down the hall, the charisma was apparent, and the audience following closely behind listening intently was a pretty easy indicator of the type of person you are. I pray that you are filled with love and strength from the many who know you, have had their lives positively affected by you, and hold you in the hearts during this difficult time. I pray for the best care for you – you are in good hands (my wife is a nurse at MD Anderson, and she sends her best as well).

    God bless,
    Daniel

    Fr,
I don’t know you directly but I love everything about the Jesuit way of life as a lay member of the church! I sent up prayers for you because I know God does answer and miracles are all around! As an oncology nurse I send you many thoughts, prayers, and wishes for God’s healing through the able hands of the doctors, nurses and staff who will be with you in treatment!

Dear Father….we don’t know each other but I saw your prayer request on Face Book. I am a consecrated widow who will be praying for your healing. I also have a friend who is a Capuchin Priest in California who about 5 years ago was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. He was given only 3 or 5 months to live. We stormed heaven for him and I contacted Sister Briege McKenna in Ireland who has a ministry to priests. Fr. Alejandro is related to Fr. Magallanes who was a Martyr in Mexico…..I am going to contact Fr. Alejandro to pray for you too….together will all of your faithful friends we will storm heaven once again. WE NEED OUR PRIESTS!!! 5 years later Fr. Magallanes is tumor and cancer free!!! Praise God!!! JUST TRUST IN GOD and NOT AS MUCH in your doctors!!! God is the God of miracles!!! There is no place on your body that has an expiration date marked down. Only GOD knows that!!! God Bless you!!!

The following made me think of Fr. TJ.

We pray for him throughout the day.

“Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”

I truly believe he is not aware of how great he is. He has thrust greatness upon those of us whose lives he has touched. As a community of faith, his work has made us greater still.

  332. Belinda De La Cruz April 15, 2014 at 2:51 pm #

    Dear Father TJ:

I have my entire family and circle of prayer warriors praying for you and lifted you up in prayer today, as the Diocese of Austin celebrated our Chrism Mass. I, especially, thought of you as our priests professed their commitment to the priesthood and to serving the Lord’s faithful. You have always served the Lord’s Kingdom with joy, faith and love and I’m confident that he still has a plan for you! So, hang in there, dear Father. You are an inspiration to us all! We love you and will continue to pray for healing and grace.

  333. Maureen Miggins Swanson April 14, 2014 at 11:45 pm #

    Dearest Father TJ.
    Everything you touch is inspired.
For the first commencement of Cristo Rey you had the vision of a processional of the faculty and VIPs to an acapella Veni Creator Spiritus, and I was the fortunate one to get to sing it. Now, we fervently pray Veni Creator Spiritus for your doctors & nurses and ask Blessed Miguel Pro to come to your aid.
Even in your suffering, you continue to inspire, and for this we love you evermore.

    Blessed Abba,

You are Jehova Rapha, the God that heals. We lift up TJ in the name Yeshua Hamashiach, Jesus Messiah, and proclaim the Name above all names as the Miracle Worker, the LORD God Almighty. “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits, Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with loving kindness and compassion” Ps 103:2-4. We pray that those surrounding TJ will speak the Living Word over him proclaiming the goodness of God continually praising His Holy Name. “Praise the LORD! Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty expanse. Praise Him for His mighty deeds; praise Him according to His excellent greatness.” Amen.

    Father Martinez,

Oh my goodness, what can I say? we are besties! I remember walking into CRJ freshman year thinking, How the heck am I going to do this?… and the first person I saw was this tiny priest wearing a orange scarf with red stripes! You were smiling sooo big (Like always) and I was just like, there is no way that he’s a priest! and the first pep talk you gave, my family and I were like Oh my gosh he doesn’t even need a mic!! haha. You would ALWAYS come in the café at lunch just to sit with us and talk about gossip and what not. and whenever we needed you, you were always there for us.

Honestly, without you Father, and without you pushing for CRJ, I don’t think I would have made it this far. I got accepted to my FIRST choice of college (Texas A&M Kingsville) because of you! and whenever I told you, you didn’t even have to say anything to me, I felt the love and proudness from you just by the HUGE hug you gave me. We will ALWAYS have our smiling competitions still, and of course you will be winning! But now, it’s my turn to smile for the both of us. Yes, this is sad news but I only think of the best for you. There’s not a doubt in my mind that you won’t make it through this. You are the strongest priest I have ever met and your energy and enthusiasm can be felt from miles away. Because of you, there are students at CRJ that would have NEVER thought they could make it to where they are now. And I am blessed and thankful for that every day. I know you will be fine! and we will see you in the hallway talking about gossip and smiling again! All of my family and friends are praying for you! God knows exactly what he’s doing, and this isn’t the end, we still have a LONG journey ahead of us. So get better and Come back to CRJ soon! We all love and miss you!

Fr. Martinez, I first met you 4 years ago when you were the spiritual leader for the Strake Jesuit mothers’ club retreat at the Cenacle retreat center. You were the person who opened my mind & heart to thinking about God as our friend. As an ‘old school Catholic’, that was a foreign concept for me. Thank you so much for the impact you have had in my life. You are in my daily prayers for all your needs.

    Dear; Fr.Martinez SJ

We have been praying for you everyday of each day since we met four years ago, and now even more. The Rosary is a powerful tool to reach The Lord ‘s mercy. The apostles were with Our Lord for three years, but Our Holy Mother lived for 30 yrs once Bishop Sheen said; that said who knows The Lord more than any other person. Our Lord is alive ! And we will keep praying for you , especially in front of Our Blessed Sacrament, because nothing is impossible for Our Lord. I know that The Holy Spirit has you in this reach and He is listening to our prayers. We will keep praying to Fr.Miguel Pro SJ. To intercede for you , and for all of us, because I know you are here to serve us and you will keep serving us with your love and passion for life . We love you ! God bless you! Krismarie and family!

We recently communicated with you on the occasion of receiving your much deserved award. Only a few days later we were saddened to learn of your illness.

We know of your strength and your fervent faith; we were touched by it hundreds of times while Cody attended Cristo Rey! Knowing you has been a blessing to all of us.

We unite in prayer with the so many people in different communities for the Lord to give you even more strength and uplift your fighting spirit even higher. We pray to the Blessed Miguel Pro y la Santisima Virgen to walk you by the hand into healing.

Lots of love and… Viva Cristo Rey!

  342. Diane Mehling April 12, 2014 at 4:55 pm #

    Dear Father,
I am Chris Mehling’s mom. I know you are a man of deep faith, as is Chris. I am talking to all the Powers that Be – including my own mother who has gone before us, to ask that you be allowed to spend some more time on this great mission. I know I am heard, but don’t always get what I want. However, as a nurse, I know that we can often create the future of our dreams by envisioning and fighting for it – of course God willing. Treatment for cancer today is a miracle in itself.

So take up the fight, and I will pray relentlessly along with all your friends and family, and we shall see what God has determined. One thing we can be sure – it will be an adventure, and all will be good. With love and prayers, Diane Mehling

O Courageous One, aka The Lion,
My thoughts and prayers have been with you these pase few weeks. There is such love and hope for you across our great city and nation. At last week’s Cardinal Circle dinner, Batman gave the closing prayer and he wanted all of us gathered there (who were there, I believe, because you showed to all of us that Houston loves and supports inner city students) to remember you and to say that your motto of “God is good” would get you through. Your faith is strong, my friend.
Upon learning that I was from Houston, everyone I met at the CRN annual meeting in Baltimore wanted to pass on their deep love and concern for you. You have touched so many through your infectious smile, unbridled enthusiasm and faithful love of God.
    Thank you for your friendship!
    Viva Cristo Rey,
    GaPO

Dear Fr. Martinez ~ There are times in your life that you meet someone and realize instantly that he or she is a messenger of Christ. You, Fr. Martinez, are among those, as you mirror His love, warmth, compassion, joy, light and hope in all whose lives you touch and all that you set out to do. I remember my first encounter with you and like so many, was spellbound. Lucky all those who have had the opportunity to reap the benefits of your vision, passionate leadership and dedication to your beloved Cristo Rey community – – or simply be a friend – as in my case – – as your energy and sincerity is constant, regardless. May God bless you with the finest team of doctors and nurses as you move through this personal challenge with the reassurance that you have my daily prayers for your comfort and strength. Love, Jennifer

T.J. , in the early days of your young adulthood I witnessed a boy transforming Into a man. Even back then we all knew you had a gift to inspire others, a glow that brought joy, humor that made us laugh, and the ability to have a good time as long as you were with those you love. Each day moving forward, I hope you feel love around you because of the gifts you have given us. Back in the day, as we walked to a dance as partners for the evening, we bowed to “Gasson” in jest. Today I will now bow down and pray to The Lord to bring you peace and a miracle. Thank you for the dance.

    Dear Father T.J.

I just learned of your health issue and wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I remember our first meeting when you explained the plans that you had for Christo Rey here in Houston; admittedly, I was a bit skeptical at how much you planned in such a short time. Fast forward to today, and look what you have done!!!! You have truly done G-d’s work and our community is such a better place today because of you. We know that you will devote the time, faith and strength to improving your health, and know that the entire community is behind you, Father T.J.

Hi TJ. Sending much love to you from Buffalo. Well, it looks like you have added another battle to the long list of challenges you have had your entire life. The Lord has not let you down so far, and he will not turn from you now. He is right there battling this disease with you and giving you the strength to keep going each day. Trust Him and Him alone. Your family in Buffalo is praying very diligently for your complete healing and restoration. You have a long life in front of you and many years of service yet to complete. The Lord was talking to you when He said in Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” I love you TJ. Aunt Sue.

    Father TJ,

I don’t know if you remember me, but I attended law school with you. We were in the same TQ. I remember you fondly–how smart, engaging, and full of energy. When I learned of all the things that you have done at Christo Rey, I was so proud! I learned about you and Christo Rey at St. Martha’s in Kingwood. After all these years, I have been going through RCIA to convert to Catholicism, and I will be confirmed at the Easter Vigil this year. You never know how paths are going to cross in life. I am so proud to hear of all the great things you have done and proud to say that I went to school with you. You and your family have been in my prayers and will continue to be. I pray that God heals you and eases your pain. You impacted me by your spirit and personality in law school, and now you are impacting my life again as I get ready to go through confirmation and strive to become a better person and Christian. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and that I am so thankful for knowing you then and now. God bless you!

    Dear Father Martinez,

We are sorry to hear of your illness.

We are all praying for you. My daughter, Allyson, teaches at John Paul II grade school – 600 students. They are all praying for you.

We called the Vietnamese Dominican Sisters (104) and asked them to pray for you.

We sent a letter and mass request to my old group of Trappist priests and brothers in Huntsville, Utah.

You are a believer and a fighter so we know you can overcome this illness. My granddaughter, Kelli, age 24, has had 2 bouts with brain tumor cancer and she is now cancer free.

My brother TJ, know that you are not alone. So many people are praying for you. So many people are learning about Fr. Miguel Pro through you. So many people are learning about Our Lady of Guadalupe through you. So many people are learning about the Cristeros and their struggles, through you. So many people are learning about you and the amazing projects you have initiated. And, most importantly, so many people are learning about the true Christ and what it takes to be a faithful disciple, through you. When all the world thought Christ’s mission ended in defeat as he was hanging on the cross, only then did he accomplish his greatest work. Even in your suffering, you are accomplishing more in building his Kingdom. Please know that here at Our Lady of Sorrows in McAllen, Texas, you are in our daily prayers during every Holy Mass. Love and blessings, Ray Thomas

I talk about him so much, one of my friends saw this and sent it to me. I have been praying for our Blessed Miguel’s canonization, and am so excited to see what God does through you. I know that with Padre Pro, you are in good company. I hope his friendship keeps you full of hope, and his intercession keeps you close to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whom he loves so much. May she hold you in the crossing of her arms and the folds of her mantle!

    Father T.J. –

Bottom line, you have made me a better man. Although our time together lasted a short 2 years in my Junior and Senior year at Dallas Jesuit, your impact will last a lifetime. Energy and Love permeated through your lessons; your constant focus towards social justice has made me understand that I am insignificant without others. You are a man I strive to be; more importantly, you are a friend. You are the definition of “Man for Others”. Know that we are with you in spirit and, more importantly, in action. I love you kind sir and fight.

    Mi amor,
This is Imelda Alamia’s friend, Marilu Garza…..I said a novena to El Sr. De Los Milagros last night and dedicated it to you…I have struggled since I heard this news….struggled to understand….struggled to accept….struggled for faith….as a cancer survivor of 16 years, I can reassure you that miracles do indeed happen…I was told that I might not live to see my daughter’s 10th birthday and she will turn 28 tomorrow….I remember my mother telling me that she would recite the 139th Psalms for me every morning before she got up….which I have done every day since then….it asks God to walk in front of you to clear your path, behind you in case you fall and with His arms around you to give you strength…I remember that I would laugh when someone would tell me one day at a time….no chinquito….at times it is merely one minute or one second at a time….always know that I will keep you close to my heart and constantly in my prayers…..sigue la lucha mi amor…..

  438. Elizabeth Martinez April 9, 2014 at 8:47 am #

    Dear Father TJ,
We love you so much. My family cares about you so much. When I heard rteh news I dropped everything I was doing and prayed, something I usually don’t do given that I am struggling with my faith. You taught me that God’s undying love for us will get us through it and I see this happening. As a community, we come as a blanket of support and hope and love. You, aside from Mrs. B believed in me from the first moment at times where things seemed a little sketchy. One time you told me that I was the future, I may not see it now but I eventually will. I am sorry that I cannot fight withy ou like you fought with me, I am still in the tundra that is Minnesota and I will be back home soon and I will give you all of my love and support like you gave yours to me. I know that you will get through this, your love and faith are what will keep you here.Mark 5:34. I read that for my Theology class and it spoke to me. You may never know why this is happening but know that God loves you. We love you. You are family, family never gets left behind. Without you, I would not be here at St. Ben’s, making a cjange and championing for women’s rights and be the voice for minority struggles in semi-diverse camous. Thank you for being my support while I am starting anew and now its my turn to support you. Lo quiero mucho padre. Mi familia lo quiere. I hope to be able to see you soon Uncle Tj. -Elizabeth Martinez

ONCE UPON A TIME, a man of GOD elevated a magical kingdom of golden yellow from a pile of abandoned ashes. Armed with the courage and strength of a Lion, he recruited others that share the vision of empowering the young ones who dared not dream. His infectious love and passion, opened doors and presented opportunities for his students that permanently transformed their lives. The legend states that this man of GOD lived forever and in the darkness of night, the CRJ symbol beams within the heart of his students as a beacon that brightens the world.

    Viva Cristo Rey! <
    Viva El Padre Con Botas!!!

I’ll never forget the day you came into my office at the downtown chancery to tell me about your plans to open a Cristo Rey campus in Houston. Your enthusiasm and energy were contagious and I made it a point to do whatever I could to help. Even though my contribution was negligible, you never failed to thank me for it – even years after I’d left the diocese. Perhaps more significant to me (as it is to most parents), you were always very good to my daughter, Julia, and for that I will be forever grateful. I have deep faith that you will beat the odds and come out on top of this, the same way you beat the odds and opened Cristo Rey Jesuit a full year before anyone believed it was possible. Making the impossible – possible. If anyone can do it, I know it’s you. Prayers and love.

  461. Andres Salgado April 8, 2014 at 8:42 pm #

Father, when I was just a boy, I expected the world. I had dreams, but they flew away from my reach. All I could do was dream of paradise, a paradise so distant that I stopped believing in myself and what I could do before I even turned 15. I was dead-set on graduating from high school and looking for a job out in the super markets and fast food restaurants.

Father, because of you and your strength, courage, charisma, amazing height, and most importantly, the will of God, you established Cristo Rey, and you got me to where I am today. I walk up and down Rice’s campus, proudly wearing my class ring every single day. From the moment I get up to the moment I go to bed, this ring is a constant reminder of the beautiful times I had laying the foundation of the school that changed my life. Even more, when I call home and hear the adventures of my (not so little) brother, Luis, I can’t help but smile and think that I got to be a part of something so marvelous.

    Here’s a picture of us both 🙂

In a very special way (your trademarked catchphrase), you are the reason why I believe. Had you not pushed to start Cristo Rey a year early, God knows where my family and I would be. Even though I feel very sad, I also feel very confident that God knows why He does what He does. I love you Father, and I will pray as much as I can from within the hedges of Rice.

¡Viva Cristo Rey! ¡Viva El Padre Con Botas!

Your holiness and love for Jesus preceded you always, your smile and joy a gracious gift to us all. I pray you feel the love all you have touched and may God bless you always.
